Rolfing® Structural Integration is the clinical discipline behind everything on this site. It is where Nicholas has spent more than three decades working with structure, one body at a time, and the tradition his teaching frameworks grew from.
The tradition
A body organized in gravity
Rolfing Structural Integration takes its name from its founder, Dr Ida P. Rolf. More than 70 years ago, she recognised the body as a system of seamless networks of tissue rather than a collection of separate parts, held together and shaped by the fascial web that surrounds, supports and penetrates muscles, bones, nerves and organs.
The work she developed addresses this connective web to release, realign and balance the whole body within gravity. Its concern was the organisation of the entire structure rather than a single sore spot, and how that organisation supports or limits the way a person stands, moves and lives.
Where the frameworks began
Palpation, discrimination, integration
Ray McCall, a Certified Advanced Rolfer and former student of Dr Rolf, once summed up the Rolfer's work in three words. Taken in order, they trace how touch becomes judgement.
Palpation
Touching the tissue, feeling for differences in texture, quality and response to determine where the work is needed.
Discrimination
Separating fascial layers that adhere, and structures pulled out of relationship by strain, injury or habit.
Integration
Relating the body's segments in an improved relationship, bringing balance within the gravitational field.
Thirty years of practice inside that triad shaped the questions Nicholas now teaches.
His own frameworks grew out of this ground and then reordered it for the assessing practitioner: discrimination before palpation, intention before intervention, and the Clinical Triangle as a way of reasoning about what is driving a structure before hands are laid on it.
The tradition taught the hands. The frameworks teach the seeing that comes first.
The treatment room today
Nicholas remains in active Rolfing Structural Integration practice in Melbourne, working with clients across every age and stage of life. The frameworks are tested there against real bodies, real responses and real clinical uncertainty.
The treatment room keeps the teaching honest, and the teaching keeps the treatment room sharp.
